One of my Confederate Ancestors was John Andrew Jordan, born on 29 July 1844 in Barnwell, S.C. to Ransom and Charlotte Atkinson Jordan. In 1861 at the age of 17 he married Doschia Balzura Adkinson. This marriage produced 8 children the last of whom passed away in 1965.
John's military muster records indicate that he enlisted as a private at Camp Butler, near Aiken, S.C., on 17 March 1862 and was assigned to Company “H”, "Ryan's Guards", of the 14th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, under the command of Lt. Colonel Edward Croft.
On or about late May or early June, the 14th S.C. was sent to the eastern theater for service with the Army of Northern Virginia.
Private Jordan saw ation with the 14th in the following battles:
Seven Days Battles VA (25 JUN - 1 JUL 1862)
2nd Bull Run VA (28 - 30 AUG 1862)
Chantilly VA (1 SEP 1862)
Antietam VA (17 SEP 1862)
Shepherdstown Ford VA(20 SEP 1862)
In October 1862, John was listed as sick in hospital at Gordonville, Va.
Fredericksburg VA (13 DEC 1862)
Chancellorsville VA(1-4 MAY 1863)
Further records show that Private Jordan was wounded and attached to hospital in Manchester, Va, on May 7, 1863 as a consequence of wounds recieved at the Battle of Chancellorsville.
Gettysburg PA (1-3 JUL 1863)
John was again wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, the records indicating that on July 5, 1863 he was "left in the hands of the enemy". Being captured he was then sent to Fort McHenry, Maryland and then in August to Fort Delaware, Delaware. He remained there for the remainder of the war. He was paroled and released on 7 June 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance to the United States. He was described in his release records as having light complexion, brown hair, blue eyes and being 5'10" tall.
After returning home to his wife, they lived, bore and raised 8 children in Ward township, Aiken County, S.C. John Andrew Jordan, at the age of 73 years, passed on to his reward on the 4th of June, 1918, and left many proud descendants of which I am one.
