Answer to Photo Quiz #1/09
The Harriet Lane
USRC - USN - CSN At the start of the War Between the States, the Union Navy found it’s self sadly short of warships. The Harriet Lane, (a revenue cutter), was commissioned by the Union Navy to relieve the garrison of Fort Sumter in April 1861. While on duty the Harriet Lane was the first Union naval ship to fire a shot. The steamer Nashville tried to run the blockade, into Charleston Harbor without displaying the national flag. A shot was placed across the Nashville’s bow by the Harriet Lane. Thus the first hostile action, ("First Shot"), of the great conflict was fired by the North against the Southern Confederacy. She was captured by the Confederacy in 1863, after a short stint in the Confederate Navy, she was reverted to a trade ship and gained fame as a blockade runner. - Charleston Harbor, April, 1861 - Correct Responces: Bill Chisolm - Links to More information - "Harriet Lane ~ Namesake" "Harriet Lane ~ Revenue Cutter" |
