The fire gutted Court House and Jail on Main and Washington Streets after the burning of Columbia by drunk and rioting troops of Sherman's 15th corp who occupied the city February 17th, 1965. Some sources say the the fire started around 1:00 pm and was started by prisoners who then escaped. The photo was taken by George N. Barnard Sherman's personal photographer.
