The site of the last confederate headquarters established by General Wade Hampton who later was at Bennett Place in Durham with General Joseph Johnston to discuss the terms of surrender with General Sherman.
After meeting with President Jefferson Davis, (then in flight from Richmond with the government),
Johnston decided to accept Sherman's terms and laid down Confederate arms at the "Bennett House"
on Hillsboro Road, in the largest troop surrender of the American Civil War.
