| In early June 1862, Federal forces landed on James Island where they entrenched at Grimball’s Landing near the southern flank of the Confederate defenses. On June 16, they launched an unsuccessful frontal assault against the "Tower Fort" at Secessionville comanded by Col.Thomas Lamar of the 1st S.C. Artillery later to become the 2nd S.C. Artillery. The Federal right column comanded by Brig. Gen. Issac I. Stevens made the farthest advance to top of the parapet only to be repulsed at great loss. |
